Sand flies are small biting insects most commonly found in tropical and subtropical regions. They are known for transmitting diseases like leishmaniasis.

Sand flies transmit disease through their bites. They can carry parasites like Leishmania, which cause leishmaniasis, and viruses such as the Toscana virus.

Leishmaniasis is a disease caused by protozoan parasites of the Leishmania genus, transmitted by the bite of infected female sand flies. It can cause skin lesions, fever, and in severe cases can be fatal if left untreated.

Wear long sleeves, use insect repellent, and sleep under mosquito nets. Avoid outdoor activities at dawn and dusk when sand flies are most active.

The CLIMOS project focuses on monitoring and controlling sand fly populations and studying their role in transmitting diseases like Leishmaniasis, in collaboration with health and environmental organizations.

Volunteer in studies, support organizations working on vector control, and spread awareness about prevention of sand fly–borne diseases.
